Forecasting with imprecise probabilities

چکیده
We review de Finetti’s two coherence criteria for determinate probabilities: coherence1 defined in terms of previsions for a set of random variables that are undominated by the status quo – previsions immune to a sure-loss – and coherence2 defined in terms of forecasts for events undominated in Brier score by a rival forecast. We propose a criterion of IP-coherence2 based on a generalization of Brier score for IP-forecasts that uses 1sided, lower and upper, probability forecasts. However, whereas Brier score is a strictly proper scoring rule for eliciting determinate probabilities, we show that there is no real-valued strictly proper IP-score. Nonetheless, with respect to either of two decision rules – Γ-Maximin or (Levi’s) E-admissibility-+-Γ-Maximin – we give a lexicographic strictly proper IP-scoring rule that is based on Brier score.

Using Inferred Probabilities to Measure the Accuracy of Imprecise Forecasts
Research on forecasting is effectively limited to forecasts that are expressed with clarity; which is to say that the forecasted event must be sufficiently well-defined so that it can be clearly resolved whether or not the event occurred and forecasts certainties are expressed as quantitative probabilities. When forecasts are expressed with clarity, then quantitative measures (scoring rules, ca...
متن کاملComputation with imprecise probabilities
An imprecise probability distribution is an instance of second-order uncertainty, that is, uncertainty about uncertainty, or uncertainty for short. Another instance is an imprecise possibility distribution. Computation with imprecise probabilities is not an academic exercise—it is a bridge to reality. In the real world, imprecise probabilities are the norm rather than exception. In large measur...
متن کاملEmpirical Interpretation of Imprecise Probabilities
This paper investigates the possibility of a frequentist interpretation of imprecise probabilities, by generalizing the approach of Bernoulli’s Ars Conjectandi. That is, by studying, in the case of games of chance, under which assumptions imprecise probabilities can be satisfactorily estimated from data. In fact, estimability on the basis of finite amounts of data is a necessary condition for i...
متن کاملStable Non-standard Imprecise Probabilities
Stability arises as the consistency criterion in a betting interpretation for hyperreal imprecise previsions, that is imprecise previsions (and probabilities) which may take infinitesimal values. The purpose of this work is to extend the notion of stable coherence introduced in [8] to conditional hyperreal imprecise probabilities. Our investigation extends the de Finetti-Walley operational char...
متن کاملImprecise probabilities based on generalized intervals for system reliability assessment
Di erent representations of imprecise probabilities have been proposed, where interval-valued probabilities are used such that uncertainty is distinguished from variability. In this paper, we present a new form of imprecise probabilities for reliability assessment based on generalized intervals. Generalized intervals have group properties under the Kaucher arithmetic, which provides a concise r...
متن کاملCombining Binary Classifiers with Imprecise Probabilities
This paper proposes a simple framework to combine binary classifiers whose outputs are imprecise probabilities (or are transformed into some imprecise probabilities, e.g., by using confidence intervals). This combination comes down to solve linear programs describing constraints over events (here, subsets of classes). The number of constraints grows linearly with the number of classifiers, maki...
